It Was a Long Time Coming
I remember it like yesterday even though it was 20 years ago. I was standing in a CompUSA, having a discussion on the phone with a friend about which backup storage solution to use for my Dell Latitude CP laptop and an upgrade drive for my dad’s Sony Vaio Desktop. An older gentleman overheard my discussion and asked for my advice on a particular product that he was interested in buying.
As I was beginning to speak with him, a floor representative from Belkin tried to intervene and offer her assistance, but the man said, “I want to speak with him!” and dismissed her. He went on tell me that he felt better getting advice from me because he could tell that I knew about the product he was looking at.
In other words, he trusted that I wouldn’t try to sell him on something that wasn’t right for him. To say that I was flattered would be an understatement. From there, I decided to start opening up to strangers more about their experiences with various products and services.
The “how to” or tutorial element comes from my dad teaching me how to work on cars, beginning at age 14. By age 18, I had assisted my dad with multiple engine and transmission replacements. I developed an understanding of auto mechanics most drivers dream of having. Before I knew it, my dad and I became the go-to auto consultants in our subdivision, as well as the rest of our town.
My knowledge of repairing cars soon spilled over into an interest in repairing and upgrading computers. I learned from a couple of nerds I grew up with. One friend knew everything about the inner-workings of computer, while the other knew a great deal about software. It was the perfect mix.
While they haven’t all been posted, I’ve been recording tutorials since 2004 and filmed my first MacBook Pro HDD replacement back in 2009.
As for my review experience, I used to write cellphone reviews on phonescoop.com’s website but that all came to an end once the iPhone was released. In my opinion, all other mobile devices outside of Apple are useless.
My interest in doing product and service reviews have influenced my son to get involved, so he is in quite a few of our videos. As far as his interest in auto mechanics, no dice! He prefers tech and gaming.
